‘Talk to Us’ is the annual awareness-raising campaign of The Samaritans and this year it is running throughout July.
Our image of The Samaritans could be one of a volunteer at the end of the phone in the middle of the night, talking to someone who is feeling desperate and suicidal. And that is one of the amazing, life-saving things that The Samaritans do – they offer a safe place for people to talk, 24/7, in their own way – about whatever is getting to them. And you don’t need to be feeling suicidal to call.
But there is a lot more to The Samaritans which is perhaps less well known.
They offer workplace training to help staff who have to deal with emotionally challenging conversations, or to help them build their own emotional resilience.
They work with schools and young people. There is so much pressure on young people today: pressure through social media and pressure to achieve. The Samaritans offer teaching resources and talks and also support to school communities in the aftermath of a suicide or attempted suicide.
Some of our clients come to us about very painful and difficult personal circumstances. As solicitors we do our utmost to support them and to make the legal process as smooth as possible but at the end of the day we are not trained as counsellors, and that is why we are supporting the ‘Talk to Us’ campaign.
