Since the 24th March 2020, the United Kingdom has been placed in lockdown, with a clear message received from the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson – the public must stay at home, and should only leave in a small number of circumstances.

We know these restrictions are in place to protect the public by attempting to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Sadly however, we are seeing this is having a detrimental impact on some who feel emotional and verbal abuse has increased, due to the stresses and strains of remaining within the home.

In the most extreme cases, victims of domestic abuse are finding it more difficult to escape from the violence suffered at the hands of their abuser.

The National Domestic Abuse helpline, run by the domestic abuse charity Refuge, reports that they have seen a 25% increase in calls, and a 150% increase for online requests for assistance, since the lockdown began.

The charity indicates that

“Isolation is often used as a tool to abuse – and while the current lockdown has the potential to exacerbate abuse – it is not the reason for it. Domestic abuse is a crime and is ultimately rooted in power and control.”

If you are suffering from Domestic Abuse, we at Fiona Bruce have experienced family solicitors who can advise on potential options available including injunctions if required. If you would like further information, please speak with our Practice Manager, Richard Bruce, on 01925 263 273.
